Asharaan [ah-SHAH-ran] [plural: Asharaan]

Lucanus Fuscaica

Across all of Lunae there is no near star to light up the planet eternal night reigns over this world. Nonetheless, the climate varies. A barren rocky desert, a rich and dense jungle and windy plains and hills of grass. The sands of Sarafan are crawling with various small reptiles and carnivores, while their coasts teem with crustations and fish. They lack plants, however. Jung'ka's rainforests are densely inhaibted by birds, various feline and reptile creatures. The dense rainforest also includes countless plants of every sort. Azulas and Challyn are very much alike with all kinds of flora and fauna gracing their plains and mountains.

Lunae Map 2.0 by zecchou
Lunae's map.

A large canine-esque shapeshifter creature, the Asharaan, inhabits the entirery of Lunae, originating on the border of Sarafan and Jung'ka after the two worlds were split into two. They come in any color, with large ears, fluffy tails and slim limbs. Asharaans have very good body temperature control and can resist cold climates well. Minerals of various sorts portrude from around the Asharran's ears, beginning and end of tail. Somewhere around 3/4ths of their tail the fur ends, revealing a scaly, multi-colored layer. Then the fur continues in a tuft adorned with gems. Those gems do not randomly grow on their bodies, because an Asharaan's bones are made of minerals themselves. They regularly shed the portruding gems and grow new ones. The minerals also store magic. Occasionally they may shift and hunt as their human forms. Despite the Asharaan's liking towards water they may go weeks without water. If they are exhausted they usually aren't thirsty, but take a bath instead which allows them to fully regenerate themselves, presumably with the help of magic. They collect water from rivers and occasionally the sea where in the process they also yield salt. An Asharaan's diet consists mainly out of a mineral they find in the mountains, with an addition of flower nectar and various plants. They enjoy seafood and meat is their very last resort. Minerals and flowers are collected by hand while the tunnels are dug by a shifted Asharaan. Fishing goes both ways.

The Asharaan are mainly nomadic, however tribes may form and those become nesters. Those village-esque structures may vary in where you find them. Sometimes they are carved out of rock in cave systems and some are right off the coast. Nomadic Asharaan travel for many reasons. Some are hunted, some are hunting and some make a living by staying at various places. Asharaan are quite peaceful and will try to avoid fights the best they can. A number of decades ago the Asharaan were hunted by the hermits in the area, as Asharaan bones and fur are considered extremely valuable.

As an animal the Asharaan mainly rely on their fangs and claws. As a human they have mastered both martial and arcane arts. Sometimes they may use both in their animal form for extra efficiency.

Asharaan measure their lifespan in human years, where the average would be around 7900 years ( they measure up to the hermits and ishins quite easily when it comes to living a long life ). Most Asharaan are found in the Sarafanian desert and mountains, adapting large ears and sharp claws. For occasions where they travel to Jung'ka they have gained superior speed, agility and a slim physique. Their shapeshifting abilities give them advantage to fight over humanoid creatures just as much as against canine, feline, reptile or avian. The Asharaan genders are even ( 50/50 for girl/boy ) however genderless Asharaan may be born. Usually, Asharaan females birth living children as default for a mammal. Sometimes, with the help of spells it may go the other way around. Asharaan usually birth while in human form however they may do so in their animal form, too. The results do not differ. Preferably when a mother is giving birth a lot of water and nutricious food is required. Pregnancy period may vary from 5 to 9 months depending on how healty the mother is. Asharaan do not change much while pregnant, human or animal form. Typically one to four children can be born from one pregnancy.

A young Asharaan in it's animal form is usually 1/3 of it's parent's ( typically mother's ) height. An average female in her animal form is about 6'6 or 2 metres, while her human form would stand at about 5'10 or 1.80 metres. An average male in his animal form is 7 feet ( or 2.15 metres ) and as a human 6'2 or about 1.90 metres. These heights may vary greatly as some Asharaan can grow double the average depending on the enviroment. Senior animal Asharaan of both genders line up at 6'2 or 1.90 metres. This may also vary. Asharaan are usually quite light compared to their height, but not many are extremely underweight.

Culture

Asharaan live in groups as they are quite friendly and open towards their own species. On the contrary, they are very closed and snobby towards other species including hermits. Typically they'd keep one mate throughout their entire life but some occasions can lead to them changing their mates ( such as death ). Most do not find one until they are about 30 years and their naturally flirty and somewhat easy-going nature might either boost or slow that process down. All tasks are split evenly.

The Asharaan have perhaps, a poorly-functioning hierarchy system. Your rank is determined by the rarity of muutations one is born with.
That being said, a large part belong to the lowest group and others are advised 'not to touch' them. The highest-ranked stay in one place. However, a low-ranked Asharaan may get married to a higher rank in which they get lifted up. Despite many Asharaan being born without mutations, those who are highly-ranked birth high-ranked children with multiple tails and other conditions.

New Asharaan Trait Chart by zecchou

Jenovah reference [2k15] by zecchou
Jenovah is an example of 'the Untouchable', the lowest rank and a nomadic Asharaan.

Disrespectful manners towards Asharaan of a higher rank are considered mildly despicable ( as you may get a second chance to fix yourself ). The Ashraan usually think quite highly of themselves and dislike being insulted especially by other species. It is punishable to steal somebody else's mate, borrow and never return ( goes for all items ) and perhaps what causes them the most offence, taking an Asharaan's minerals without permission, shed or not. Many of these are punishable by having to work non-stop for a span of time or a short exile. In rougher cases like murder, rape and harsh discrimination you will be exiled from the tribe permanently. Each year a new family / bloodline is picked to be the "judges" and they decide whether the case is punishable or not.

An Asharaan is considered an adult at the age of 18. In some tribes you may have to preform a rite, but those are specific an native to various tribes.

Asharaan mainly trade for the currency of the country they live in. They collect materials, craft things and sell them at bazaars. Some Asharaan may form wandering troupes. Asharaan may start working at different ages, depending on the job. Some may follow family business. A few common jobs are farmers, fishermen, weavers, pottery makers and blacksmiths. To name some of the higher rank there are jewelry makers, healers / clerics, priests and military leaders. Occupations characteristic for nomadic Asharaan are dancers, singers, acrobats and various preformers. Usually a newborn is to be taken care of by it's parents or godparents. A child of a higher rank will get an advisor as it's parents are often very busy.

Art of War

As stated earlier, Asharaan will avoid fights and especially war at all costs. If they are forced into it the army, consisting of elite soldiers is divided into factions. Foot soldiers, riders and mages. The military readers first send out scouts to analyze the opposing army and later write down a strategy. If the parents, or even a child itself decided to be a warrior they are sent to a military camp at 7. There they are taught martial arts, lancing, arcane arts and occasionally fencing. They are also trained to endure hunger without complaining ( their resistance to temperatures is already high ). The military leaders fight alongside their armies. Victories depend on the opposing army. The most common options are to either defeat the commander or round the enemy. Occasionaly they may need to capture and take back someone or something. Asharaan use mainly lances and spears, however swords, axes and bows are common too. Most weapons are enchanted as Asharaan have very high magical capacity and potential. Lances and other weapons are made out of mixed steel found in their mines ( or it is traded ). Riders may ride a transformed foot soldier or another animal that has been tamed.

Religion

Asharaan hoard flowers. Most are tropical flowers found at the border of Jung'ka but may include Sarafanian desert, coastal or even mountain flowers. They hoard them either because of the color or perhaps because of something symbolic. How many types an Asharaan hoards is not determined by anything, and some are known to hoard 10 types of flowers.

Asharaan have nearly the same religious beliefs as the rest of Lunae. They go to shrines to worship the deities their tribe believes in. They also preform various rituals with music, dancing and offerings of flowers and food. They worship all deities with equal respect and discard most superstitions other species may have as their priests preach that way. The reason dates back eons. A separate archbishop is a leader for the religious society, and often can see messages sent to them by the deities in their dreams. Depending on the view, the archbishop may or may not have more power in the society than the leading tribe.

Asharaan marriage traditions differ from the rest of Lunae. Each tribe has their own specific rituals for the celebration. Something that is common is that rather than one, the couple share five kisses. One on the forehead, chin, both cheeks and lips as a symbol of loving all of your partner. Respective tribe crests are worn attached to sashes or belts during the wedding ceremony. Soft colors are preferred. The only ones that break away from these traditions are Enigma Seekers.

Tribes

Ashraan territory map by zecchou
Ashraan Tribe territories.

The Ashraan are divided into five main tribes. Each tribe worships one/or multiple deities and has a leading family. Each five years a new tribe is selected to lead the rest.

Sun Tribe

Sun Tribe's main territory is Vezantiya, with small colonies sprinkled around Sarafan and other countries.Personality traits characteristic for the Sun tribe are courageous, wily and clever profiles. They are most likely to worship the sun god Seshtar.

Moon Tribe

The Moon Tribe thrives in Challyn, with less colonies in the rest of the world. One of their biggest is near the Al Shani mountains. Moon Tribe Ashraan are often extremely loyal and peaceful. They worship the moon goddess Mithrune.

Dusk Tribe

Spread across Azulas and Sarafan, Dusk Tribe Asharaan have taken on a slightly more aggressive nature and often exhibit fierce presonality traits aswell as great strenght, physical and mental. They are most likely to worship the moon goddess.

Dawn Tribe

Populating Jung'ka, the Dawn Tribe are often considered to be the closest to the Ansyen.Dawn Tribers are wise and proud of their power. They are most likely to worship the sun god.

Eclipse Tribe

The Eclipse Tribe members have made their home in Sarafan. They are very secretive and are much faster than an average Asharaan. Eclipse Tribers are notorious for their disliking towards the Sun Tribe because of past events. They worship either deity.
The Eclipse tribe is in fact an offshoot of Enigma Seekers and many members can trace back to Seeker roots. This sometimes shows in their appearance with pointier ears and bigger tails.

The Ansyen [Lucanus Lumilis]

The Ansyen are the ancestors of current Asharaan. They are one big tribe, split into smaller factions. Living in an underground metropolis extending to two worlds, Lunae and the Callithrixian country Sphequam, they are hidden behind the Diamond Cascades. The waterfall massives are located at the Qetzerl mountain in Jung'ka's dense jungle. Main differences between Ansyen Asharaan and normal Asharaan are that the Ansyen live two times, or in rare cases three times as long as an Asharaan ( 800-1200 years ). The Ansyen are more prone to acquiring genetic mutations, and also grow slightly taller. When shifted into their animal form they can reach heights in 4 metres (13'1'') and taller. The Ansyen have a similar heirarchy system, however it is not only determined by the rarity of mutations. They will put you through challenges and virtual dilemmas to see how you handle the situations and deem if you are worthy of being raised in rank.

Culture

The Ansyen metropolis, Zhadena, consists of five districts. Each is inhabitated by members of the different tribes. Banners with the crests hang from windows and lights are nearly always lit. Zhadena, stretching to two worlds rarely ever sleeps so to speak. In the middle, the imperial palace tops everything like a cherry on the cake. Most Ansyen Asharaan wear clothing consisting of two parts, oraine ( "first drapes" ) and kalire ( "second drapes" ). Oraine refers to the clothing an Ansyen wears under the kalire. Oraine can be anything, while kalire are often long drapes with intricate patterns usually featuring a sash, scarf or quite possibly a dhuan, a veil that reaches thr ground on the back but in the front it only covers the face with a small, usually laced opening for the eyes. Oraine and kalire often match and may include the respective tribe crest.

Lapis Dracelon reference 2k15 by zecchou
Lapis Dracelon is a former mercenary and one of the current elders of the Nightmare Water tribe.

Ansyen Tribes

The Ansyen consist of five tribes, just like the modern Asharaan. Those tribes are the ancestors of current tribes. Each tribe has a council of five elders. The Ansyen have the Akamen ( an "emperor" or the Akameen, an "empress" ) to keep them together.

Enigma Seekers [Lucanus Suricisii]

The Enigma Seekers are a separate subspecies/tribe of the Asharaan. They populate mostly Azulas; having occupied a whole district of Azarot to their own liking. Enigma Seekers are malicious, lunatic version of the Asharaan.

Backstory

Dating back to over ten thousand years, once a stray Ansyen stumbled upon Aedeversio Exidium's mansion. Aedeversio was otherwise known as the personification of chaos, the Devourer, and had been sealed away multiple times by the other Creationist deities (he himself was one also titled the Seventh). The Ansyen that happened upon his domain fell prey to a magic-cancelling and fear-bringing aura hovering around the cliffs. However, that Ansyen's strong hatred kept him going. The mansion's doors swung open as if welcoming the brave traveler. After speaking with the dark lord the Ansyen traveled across many kingdoms seeking to fulfill his request. It is said he almost found it, but the elusive bird slipped away. The Ansyen returned with a glittering feather of Enigma. Aedeversio praised his work and with the dark lord's help, the Asharaan finally had his revenge. After that, the Enigma Seekers appeared. Their main objective is to capture Enigma, the elusive bird of mystery and sin. This has come to be known as the Quest of Ten Thousand Years. It is said that whoever captures Enigma and brings it to Aedevesio shall be granted something of unimaginable worth. Perhaps it is the Enigma bird itself?

Appearance

Enigma Seekers or just Seekers for short are extremely prone to acquiring mutations. The fact that they also may pair with other species like demons increase their chance of acuquiring wings, horns or a demonic tail. Seekers usually have a lifespan somewhat longer than an Asharaan and if they are kept healthy they may measure up to an Ansyen's maximum lifespan. An Enigma Seeker's features are often more sharp and that is show in their ears, tail tips and minerals. They are however still, flowy and elegant. Seekers usually differ with sharp hearing, large fluffy tails and poiniter ears.
Their mental traits are not too much different though they are definately more corrupted in their thoughts with a darker sense of humor. Some Seekers exhibit lunatic or insane behaviour on a daily basis.

Culture

Enigma Seekers maintain a diet similar to the standard Asharaan diet consisting of minerals and plants. However, Seekers are more likely to eat meat and fish. In some cases ( which aren't that rare ) a Seeker will become vampiric or cannibalistic. They rarely eat other Seekers though. The gap between rich and poor is massive in the Enigma Seeker society. While the lower class struggles in the slums, the aristocrats wallow in luxury. Whoever is born in the middle usually has a hard time surviving because everything you own will constantly be taken or given away, or given to you. Enigma Seekers are a collective species among themselves and very much so. They are extremely cold towards other species, particularly other Asharaan. If you play your cards right with a Seeker and they take you in even for a night, you are lucky. Some decide to kill whoever they encounter on the spot.
Clothes and traditions vary depending on the region you find a Seeker in, though they are mostly inspired by the reinassance, baroque and rococo eras of Europe.

Engima Seekers usually have dark occupations such as sorcerers, necromancers, dark mages and alchemists besides the standard jobs like merchants and blacksmiths.

Sub-categories, tribes and classes

Enigma Seeker Categories by zecchou

Enigma Seekers are split up into five groups. Their signatue tribe symbol is a crescent moon ( can be turned any way ) with a pentagram and a gemstone inside it. Yellow gemstones symbolise the lowest rank, nearly slaves. Aqua and green make up most of the Seeker population. Purple gemstones belong to the richer, like barons and counts. Red gemstones, some of the most valuable range from marquis to archduke families.
A pentagram flipped upside down with a usually black gemstone ( varies from person to person or bloodline to bloodline ) is reserved for the royal family and the most esteemed peers of the society. The royal family, otherwise known as House of the Basilisk or the Surrexit family are and have always been leaders of the Enigma Seekers.

Thallyx by zecchou
Thallyx Surrexit is the crown prince of Enigma Seekers.

Religion

One thing all Enigma Seekers share in common is the feast held on the night of the red moon. That feast is dedicated entirely and only to the dark lord. On that night, one or a number of Seekers always venture out to find the Enigma bird. They rarely return, if at all. It is one of the biggest taboos to defile the dark lord and worship a different god. That taboo is bigger than murder, rape, discrimination and various others. Seekers often go to pray and offer in a small shrine pointed toward Aedeversio Exidium's mansion.Enigma Seekers are on extremely good terms with the dark lord and some have met him in person. Despite all the other nasty things, they are loyal followers. Some Seekers venture up towards the cliffs to Aedeverio's mansion. Those who come back successfully usually acquire something of great power.

Ashalachi [Lucanus Aranicus]

Ashalachi tribe symbol.

The Ashalachi, or also known as Faerie or Singer Asharaan are another sub-species of the Asharaan. These creatures often reside in forests of both Lunae and Callithrix. A distinct feature by which you can tell an Ashalachi Asharaan from any other is, among minerals, their hoarding flower grows. This is caused by the Ashalachi eating their hoarding flower. The flowers blossom and wilt with seasons. Ashalachi are regarded as the most peaceful, druidic and spiritual subspecies. They are also the most friendly to humans, that is, unless they have malicious intent. The Ashalachi sing. Their voices hold inexplictable beauty, and hunting for Ashalachi is not advised as they use their singing abilities to lure hunters and people they deem dangerous into swamps or lakes and drown them. Ashalachi of both genders may also use their external beauty to lure other species into their embrace, for all sorts of reasons. Faerie Asharaan usually build small villages and settlements near waterfalls, streams and river deltas. It is more common for Ashalachi than any other subspecies of Asharaan to eventually grow insect-or faerie-esaque wings later in life. There have also been certain cases recorded of Ashalachi having fins and being able to breathe underwater, though that is quite rare. It is common for the hair and fur of Ashalachi to be decorated with various flowers.

Culture

In the small settlements that Ashalachi build sometimes directly above water or in trees, the Kaliph's, or the chief's house is the most noticeable. Small huts are usually built in wood, straw and large leaves and decorated with myriads of flowers and intricately-spun cloth. The settlements are connected by hanging bridges, both above water and in tall trees. Minerals are cut out from their diet and Ashalachi are almost always vegetarian though fish is also often included. They cook or roast their meals over open fire and to preserve the food for later use they cast spells and pack the food in large leaves with various flowers of multiple properties. Ashalachi have erased the social heirarchy system and elect their Kaliphs through series of trials, mental and physical. Both males and females can become a Kaliph. In bigger settlements, powerful enchanters build stone golems to use as guards.

Religion

Ashalachi choose not to show themselves outside their circles and rarely visit shrines. Instead, they build their own small altars and communicate with spirits of their predecessors with the help of a Tahkri, a shaman. The Tahkri live in a more secluded hut near the Kaliph's. Tahkri use drums and flutes to play spiritual rhymes. They also sing. The Tahkri can also briefly communicate with the deities and pass on their prayers that way.

Ahreh [Lucanus Heprentii]

Ahreh are Asharaan sporting plumage at the tips and bases of their tails instead of fur. They also have long feathers coming out from the base of their ears. The Ahreh live in usually dry, rocky mountains. They're capricious, restless and love travelling. Living in such an enviroment causes them to treasure seafood and they prefer meat and bird instead. Scooping down into valleys for the green parts of their meals, they also collect their hoarding flower there. They live as long as normal Asharaan, but may share the size of an Ansyen in animal form. Their claws are also sharp and cannot be retracted with aids them in climbing steep rock walls and catching their prey.
As for water, the Ahreh utilize cave pools filled with water or even create artificial pools.

Ahreh as stated before love travelling and do so most commonly in groups of two to six or even more. They enjoy the company near a bonfire in the evening.

Culture

The Ahreh's culture is mixed, as they appear in all corners of Lunae and Sphequam, travelling between those and taking their respective cultures around the globe. With such being done they are almost gypsy-esque.
Ahreh only have two tribes, Tentri and Phaori. These two are not on good terms. Old brawls have not been forgotten and are brought up to this day as new ones are created constantly. Phaori fancy the dry lands, while Tentri prefer mountains with rivers. That gives Tentri priveldge for fish.

Xares by zecchou
Xares is your typical Phaori tribe member.

Ahreh are quite industrial though and mechanisms have been found in their habitat, usually powered by air or water and made out of sturdy wood. As such they also need to be repaired quite a lot but are effective as long as they work. Those mechanisms could range from elevators to book-printing machines. Common professions include engineers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors and rangers. Some Ahreh have even been found taking care of sheep down in the valleys below their territory. Ahreh engineers build tunnels to guide natural air and gas currents to a desired location to either power a mechanism or serve some other purpose.

For clothes, Ahreh wear a lot of breezy garments. Males tend to have slightly rougher fabric, whereas girls get to wear the smoother stuff. For various festivals though silk and even satin pieces of clothing have been found. Ahreh are hoarders and value trinkets, particularly the shiny ones. They adore hand-crafts and will often make jewelry out of the stuff they find. Another big accessory is various beads in their hair. The beads are of then made out of wood, bone or stones like jasper and jade and are an important part of their life. Metal is quite uncommon and belongs to the more rich and lucky Ahreh. Though for festivals many wear beads cut out from gemstones, truly a lot of sparkle. Occasionally in the cold winter months Ahreh done capes and other pieces of clothing made from animal hide and feathers.

As for settlements, Ahreh build their homes in cave systems or wooden houses at the edges of cliff walls. If lucky enough to be blessed with trees in a rocky terrain they will immideately build a tree house. Hanging bridges connect the settlements, the Ahreh have no fear. The bridges go over rivers and valleys and may be up to kilometres long.
Occasionally, an entire city cut out of rock may be found.

Religion

Like most Asharaan, Ahreh are anti-social when it comes to humans and would rather stay away. They build tiny shrines and altars in caves to worship selected deities. Those buildings often include intricate carving and painting. The shrines are often built near natural or artificial pools the Ahreh create and for various purposes the pools can be illuminated with crystals and other things creating a marvelous display of light in a cave. Rituals are held by or with water, and some Ahreh get their favourite rosary blessed.

There's a festival that is particularly widely celebrated in both tribes, the Hen'menya. A feast of love, peace, color and music. On Hen'menya, a large variety of kites graces the sky. Every color and shape is raised up in the sky that day. Kites symbolize freedom. Hen'menya is celebrated for two weeks with one week given to restock on all the party dishes and other things necessary. On this festival, both tribes become friendly to each other again, even for a little while. It is celebrated somewhere around mid-autumn. Plants are dried and crushed into powder that is mixed with water and some other substances to make a thicker combinaton that is thrown into the air in bursts of color. White clothes are common on Hen'menya.
A lot of dancing takes place, along with colorful scores of music. On that day a lot of fish is also eaten, and rarities like crustations are brought onto the tables. During that time the Ahreh also thank the deities for luck in hunting or bountiful harvest.

Rosaries

Rosaries are the beads Ahreh put in their hair, around their wrists in forms of bracelets, anklets, necklaces, whatever. These rosaries are tied to various rituals in their life like birth, coming of age, warrior ranks, marriage and death. At birth or Fehri, an Ahreh will get a rosary consisting out of ten beads. It's usually worn in their hair, but some prefer it as a bracelet while their wrists are small. The beads are one-color and made out of wood.
During the coming of age festival, also known as Tenten, the Ahreh will get their previous rosary replaced with one that consists of 15 beads with two varying colors and the beads are made of stone. To celebrate warrior ranks and accomplishments also known as Henremen, small figures will be attached to the tips of their hair, usually also of wood and stone. For weddings (Meridar) the rosaries are of white marble and serve almost as wedding rings. For death (Ahtamen), the beads are of onyx and the amount is determined by how many rosary beads the Ahreh has owned in total and as such, some Ahreh's burial rosaries have reached near 100 beads.
During other festivals you may get your favourite rosary blessed.
The Ahreh keep every rosary they get throughout their life.
Inbetween all of that they can also get customized beads whenever.

Axram [Lucanus Diffus]

Axram Asharaan are a recently-discovered tribe living in the Bay of Eyes. They seem to be native to these islands and how they got there is unclear. Not much is known about their culture as these Ashraan do not speak. Even when they do, it's in a completely foreign language that seems to have developed all on its own in isolation of the dangerous flora in the Bay of Eyes.

Key differences between Axram and the other kinds of Asharaan is the fact that instead of the normal gems from their ears, the Axram tribe grows horns. The crystal arrangements on their tails are also arranged in beautiful, flower-like formations rather than the usual, less patterned crystal growth that other Asharaan show. They are known to be in touch with nature, seem to be unbothered by the myriad of flesh-eating and venomous plants in the Glimmering Foest and enjoy wearing crystal baubles.
Axram are very hostile to outsiders by default and will often attack on sight.
